- BMW M Performed Better Than Mercedes-AMG in 2020
While the pandemic might have disruption many, the was also an opportunity for others. This is especially true where many premium automakers recorded growth for certain models.
For the year 2020, BMW M increased its sales by 6%, reaching a total of 144,218 units. The company say this is also a record for the highest annual sales.
BMW attributed the increase in sales to the X5 M and X6 M, both of which were the latest generations launched in late 2019. However, reading in between the lines, it was actually the range-topping “M Performance” variant of the regular BMW 3 and 4 Series – such as the M340i xDrive – that helped with the record sales last year.
Mercedes-AMG managed to move 125,129 units which translated to a decline of 5.3%. Both high-performance brands disclosed the North American market is their largest, followed by China. There was a tremendous sales growth in China for Mercedes-AMG with a 32% increase in ownership.
With the deliveries for the all-new BMW M4 and M3 models scheduled for this year, we can expect BMW M to surpass their 2020 record. As for Mercedes-AMG, perhaps the brand will focus communications on the wide range of 35-series line-up for 2021.
