Budget airlines AirAsia Group Bhd. takes a step forward when announced that the company will launch its flying taxi service in 2022.

Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Airasia, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes confirms the statement.

“We are working on that right now. I think we are about a year and a half away from launching,” said Fernandes.

Fernandes was speaking during an online discussion as part of the Youth Economic Forum.

“It will be powered with a quadcopter,” said the CEO briefly.

Nevertheless, he did not comment further on the specifications of the upcoming flying taxi.

As the company was recovering from the impact of the pandemic, AirAsia was seen accelerating in the digital space.

AirAsia also launched a “super app” last year, offering services such as travel and shopping to logistics and financial services.

“We took it as an opportunity, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to recast your business, re-look at things,” the Co-founder said.

Accordingly, Fernandes is optimistic that air travel will soon recover with the launch of the vaccination program. The airline offers low-cost flights that link 22 countries which are mostly in the Asia-Pacific region.

“I hope interstate travel will start in the next two to three weeks,” he said.

Fernandes also mentioned that AirAsia expects that international borders to start opening in either July or August.
