Strengthening its status as a safety pioneer, Volvo Cars presents the world’s first interior radar system that helps to ensure nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

The new system is designed to be accurate and sensitive enough to detect the tiniest movements at sub-millimeter scale, and covers the entire interior of the car.

It will first be installed as standard in the Volvo EX90 all-electric SUV that will be revealed on 9 November, and moving forward, it will also be included in other forthcoming models.

Volvo Cars’ senior technical specialist in injury prevention, Lotta Jakobsson, expressed, “No one chooses to be distracted or tired, but we know it can happen. We’re all human and distraction is a fact of life. With the help of cutting-edge technology, we’ll support you when you’re not at your best and help you avoid leaving family members or pets behind by accident.”

How does it work, well first off, to cover as much of the interior as possible, the radars have been spaced all over the cabin from front to back.

Specifically, it comes with sensors integrated in the overhead console, the roof-mounted reading lamps and the trunk of the car.

Then, according to Volvo experts, the best time for drivers to get notified about movements in the car is when they want to lock the car doors.

As such, every time the driver attempts to do so, the system will be activated and determine whether the car is empty of any occupants, before it allows the car to be locked.

If a family member or pet is detected inside, the car will remain unlocked and the system will display a reminder on the center console screen to check the cabin for occupants.

Lastly, the car’s climate system can remain on if occupants are detected in the cabin, to improve comfort. This can also help lower the risk of hypothermia or heatstroke.

Jakobsson concluded, “We’ve always been a leader in safety, and we want to continue protecting lives by setting new standards in automotive safety. That also means making you feel safe and giving you peace of mind. That type of emotional safety will help you enjoy life to the fullest, while at the same time helping you to prevent tragedies from happening.”
