Volvo XC60 Named As Brand’s Best-Seller With Over 2.7 Million Units Sold
The Volvo XC60 premium compact crossover SUV now stands as the Swedish marque's all-time best-seller.

The Volvo XC60 luxury compact crossover SUV has become the Geely-owned Swedish brand’s best-selling model. In fact, XC60 nameplate has outsold Volvo’s previous best-seller, which was its iconic Volvo 240 model.
According to Volvo, the feat comes as sales and production of the XC60 model surpass 2.7 million units. First introduced in 2008, the XC60 spans two generations, with the current second-gen model debuting back in 2018.

Volvo revealed that the XC60, which first debuted in 2008, has outsold its previous best-seller - the iconic Volvo 240 - with over 2.7 million units produced and sold.

In contrast, the iconic Volvo 240 mentioned, part of the Volvo 200-series range, saw global sales surpass 2.6 million units worldwide since production began in 1974. It was also locally built (CKD) in Malaysia between 1983 and 1994.
At its prime, the Volvo 240 stood as one of the world’s safest cars thanks to the ingenious safety technologies incorporated into it. Included here were front and rear crumple zones, and a reinforced passenger compartment.
The Volvo 240 was also amongst the first road cars to feature an enhanced side-impact protection, which later evolved into Volvo’s Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS). In 1978, it also introduced the integrated child booster seat – common in modern Volvos.

During its time, the Volvo 240 was state of the art. It was also regarded as one of the world's safest cars.

According to Volvo, the XC60 continues the 240’s safety-first heritage. This was evident when it became the first road car to feature a low-speed automatic braking system in 2008.
Later in 2017, the XC60 introduced Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which works by steering the car back into its lane to avoid drifting into oncoming traffic. Just like 240 was in its time, Volvo argues the XC60 is one of the safest cars in the world today.
Volvo argues that the XC60 continues the safety-led approach and legacy of the 240 today.

“Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car – you could spot one in almost every driveway,” says Susanne Hägglund, head of Global Offer at Volvo Cars.
“Today the XC60 has taken over that position in two ways. Not only as the family favourite, but also becoming our all-time top-seller, which in itself is the ultimate proof point of a successful car,” adds Hägglund further.
Locally, Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) continues to offer the XC60 as a localised (CKD) product that rolls off its assembly line in Shah Alam – again, just like the 240 model noted. Offered solely in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) form, the XC60 is priced at RM357,888.
