- Starbucks Partner Yinson GreenTech To Set-Up EV Charging Facilities
Having a cuppa while juicing up your ride has never been easier thanks to this latest partnership between coffee chain giant Starbucks Malaysia and Yinson GreenTech. Today they unveiled one of their 17 operational electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at their flagship Starbucks Eco Grandeur in the township of Puncak Alam, Selangor. Furthermore it was also announced that over the next three years, they would together put-up more EV charging stations, consisting of both DC fast chargers and AC, all accessible through the chargeEV App and even comes with PHEV and CHAdeMO adapter cable.
From now till 31st October, all EV charging at any of the 17 Starbucks EV stations would be FREE OF CHARGE.
FREE charging session in progress
According to Louise Chin, Chief Financial Officer, Berjaya Food Berhad, the ultimate goal is to set-up a vast network of drive-thru Starbucks outlets with EV charging facility ideally within a 150km distance in between each other. This is as part of the brand’s commitment to be more resource-positive in reducing its global carbon footprint by 50% by 2030.
“Charging your car should be as seamless as ordering a cup of coffee, and now it can be,” said Dato’ Sydney Quays, Group CEO of Berjaya Food Berhad and managing director of Starbucks Malaysia & Brunei. “As a company, we have always been passionate about protecting our planet and driving innovation to enhance the Starbucks experience for our customers. With the inclusion of EV chargers in our stores, it represents a significant milestone in our sustainability efforts as a company, and we hope will lead the retail industry towards a decarbonized future for Malaysia.”
Furthermore, Starbucks has set a leading example to its competitors by being the first retail coffee chain in Malaysia with its own EV charging facility. This will enable Starbucks to attract the patronage of EV owners to unwind while charging up their vehicles. This effort by Starbucks can be highly praised as private entities would have to step-up in expanding the EV charging facilities in order to speed up EV adoption and indirectly reduce the feeling of range anxiety.
Yinson GreenTech (YGT) Senior Vice President of Electromobility Ruslin Tamsir said, "We are delighted to support Starbuck's ambition of innovating with more responsible stores by providing chargEV solutions to their outlets, and we are jointly committed to rolling out even more charge points over the next few years. The chargEV team warmly welcomes other like minded businesses to engage with us to find out about our integrated EV solutions and how they, too, can participate in Malaysia's EV transition."
To put into context, chargEV is the nation’s largest public charging network operator with over 400 charging points nationwide. They offer two types of charging facility based on the EV users’ requirement, ie; DC fast chargers at 50kW (upto 60kW) for quick charging application which in normal scenario would not exceed an hour and the commonly available AC chargers (22kW) which charges an EV up in about 3 to 4 hours. Users would have the option to choose their speed requirement and retrive to their cuppa.
In order to utilise these charging stations, Starbucks customers would have to download the chargEV app via the Apple Store or Google Play store to activate their charging sessions. First time EV users are required to set up their profile in the app, which only takes a few minutes. Now to make the entire session seamless, why not even order your Starbucks coffee via their mobile app to order ahead.
It is important to take note that although the chargeEV app requires no membership, users can opt to subscribe on a yearly commitment basis, which would come with added benefits such as exclusive promotions and discounted rates at all chargEV AC and DC charging points in Malaysia.
As of now, there are 226 EV charging stations readily available at 17 Starbucks outlets in Klang Valley, Penang, Malacca and Johor. The stations are at:
