Mansory adds Rolls-Royce-styled ‘coach’ doors option for the G-Class

‘Suicide’ or the more correctly-named ‘coach’ doors, is something we’re probably more used to seeing in the creations of the Rolls-Royce brand. As argued by said British coachbuilders, this type of door-opening brings forth a more graceful way of entering and alighting from its vehicles.

Now, if you fancied having such doors primed on your Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Mansory has got you covered. Said aftermarket tuning brand took to the web recently to show off this new rear-hinged door option fitted in one of its latest builds. The tuner adds that it now offers this feature for customers driving either the AMG-built G63 performance flagship or any other regular (or armored) G-Class too.

The car pictured started out life as an AMG-built G63 flagship, but it’s been specifically tuned for the United Arab Emirates. The same car was previewed when Mansory opened its Dubai showroom last year, but it’s rear-hinged doors went somewhat unnoticed then. Perhaps the protruding carbon-fiber aerokit, wide fenders, and massive 23-inch forged wheels took up the attention instead.

This sort of conversion is not easy to perform given that the doors must be redesigned and allow it to open the other way. Also, doors and tailgates are amongst the most difficult parts to manufacture as both require a great level of attention to detail and precision.

Also changed are the door handle positions, with this build prompting Mansory to swap out the hinges and the door opening/closing mechanism that locks onto the B-pillar now. Furthermore, Mansory further claims that this modification has practical benefits, key to which being its ability to provide easier access to the rear seats.

‘Coach’ doors design and trace their roots back all the way to the horse-drawn carriage era. These days, apart from brands such as Rolls-Royce, they are rarely used in modern cars. There have been several notable exceptions though, like the Mazda RX-8, Toyota FJ Cruiser, and BMW i3 for instance.

As to how much it will cost customers to add these rear-hinged doors on their G-Class with Mansory remains uncertain for now, though said aftermarket tuning brands aren’t known to make cheap parts. The same applies to the extravagant bodykit and re-upholstered interior the example pictured sports.

And, in typical Mansory fashion, these style features can combine with extensive performance upgrades the brand is renowned for, which allows the G63 AMG and its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 to pump out as high as 888 HP.
