- New Suzuki Jimny 5-door Unveiled In India
The 2023 Suzuki Jimny 5-Door has made its official debut at the Auto Expo 2023 event taking place in India this week. This comes shortly after the Japanese S-brand revealed its eVX electric crossover concept as the same show.
With a black roof to contrast its signature Kinetic Yellow body, it keeps the base car's overall upright and boxy styling. Some recognisable features carried over from the 3-door model include flared wheel arches, round headlights, slatted front grille, exposed rear hinges, and what appears to be off-road tyres.
As for wheels and tyres, the Jimny 5-door rolls on 15-inch wheels wrapped in 195/80 tyres. It also gets a full-size spare that’s fastened to the tailgate.
Details released by Suzuki reveals that that the Jimny 5-Door measures 3,985 MM in length, with a 2,590 MM wheelbase, marking extensions of 505 MM and 340 MM respectively overt the base Jimny 3-door. Both its height and width of 1,720 MM and 1,645 MM respectively, remains unchanged.
The lengthened body and cabin allows this flavour of the Jimny to accommodate a proper second row bench seat for three passengers. With the rear seats up, there’s up to 208 litres of cargo space available, but this is expandable up to 332 litres with said bench folded.
Under the hood, Suzuki has kept the 3-door model’s 1.5-litre 4-cyl petrol mill, which outputs 102 HP and 130 NM. Said mill is then paired with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission choices, whilst a full-blown 4x4 driveline comes as standard.
Other features include a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an Arkamys audio system, reverse camera, and a few other goodies.
Safety, on the other hand, is guaranteed through the presence of six airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control (ESC), In terms of safety, the list includes six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), as well as both hill-hold hill-descent assists.
In comparison to the 3-door Jimny we have in Malaysia from Japan, the two extra doors signify somewhat of an upgrade. However, the prospects of seeing this version of the Jimny going on sale here in Malaysia – both officially and via grey importers/recond – remains to be seen given the next set of facts.
For now, Suzuki’s India-based subsidiary Maruti Suzuki will assemble the Jimny 5-Door at its Gurugram plant and is already taking orders in India where it'll go on sale starting May this year. Other markets set to receive it include Africa, Australia, and Latin America, for now that is.
