- Volvo EX30 Patent Images Leaked, Showcasing Compact EV SUV

The all-new Volvo EX90 is set to be the face of Volvo’s new EV lineup, which will feature a wide range of models from different segments. One of those new models is the soon-to-be-launched Volvo EX30, poised to make its global debut later in June 7, confirmed by the Swedish marque.

Roughly a month ahead of its scheduled launch, patent images of the EX30 have surfaced online, only showcasing the exterior design of the new model. Posted at Spanish automotive forum page Cochespias, said images depicted the EX30 as a compact EV crossover with similar design cues and styling as its bigger sibling, the EX90.

From the front, the EX30 mirrors its bigger sibling by sporting the grill-less front fascia, primed with the latest iteration of the marque’s iconic Mjolnir headlights design. Though no Iron Mark logo is present in said patent image, we can assume that the EX30 will also sport them, just like any other Volvo models.

The side profile of the EX30’s patent image showcases the car’s typical, boxy-like SUV silhouette, plus standard SUV features like underbody cladding and pronounced wheel arches contour. Since this is just a mere patent image, we can’t see the exact design of the wheels, nor its dimension.

At the rear, the EX30 sports a rather similar-looking taillights design as the EX90, but with a slight added touch. Present here is what seems like two stripes connecting both the left and right taillights, possibly being LED light bars like we’ve seen in many modern EVs nowadays. But don’t take our word for it, as these grayscale images are mere for patent filing, thus providing no extra details for us to dissect.

Interestingly, this set of patent images also features a top-down view of the EX30, which showcases what seems to be an all-glass roof. Though we can’t exactly confirm nor deny this, several current Volvo models do come standard with a panoramic glass roof, including the EX90 – which makes this theory more plausible.
As for the rest of the car, nothing else can be derived from the leaked images. But word around the campfire suggests that the EX30 will ride on the Geely-sourced SEA EV architecture, while sharing most of its underbody components with an upcoming subcompact EV crossover from Volvo’s sister brand, Polestar.

As for the powertrain setup, the EX30 will likely follow the same conjecture with both the Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge, available in both single motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual motor all-wheel drive options. But just like the rest of the details here, we have to wait until its launch next month to find out whether those are true or not.

The Volvo EX30 is poised to make its first public debut on June 7, 2023, Volvo confirms. Apart from the launch date, the Swedish marque doesn’t reveal much else about the new model, except by saying that “thinking small is one of our biggest ideas.”
