Transport Minister Anthony Loke has stated that the government is thinking about giving the green light for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project to connect Penang island to the mainland. This comes after Putrajaya previously approved an LRT project on the island, which will connect Bayan Lepas to Komtar in George Town.

Loke added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed the significance of not limiting LRT development to the island alone. Anwar stressed the importance of establishing a link between the island and the mainland area of Seberang Perai.

Furthermore, Loke firmly stated during the "Ceramah Madani" gathering at Seberang Jaya expo ground that the project could progress with Anwar's support, as he also serves as finance minister. The proposed LRT link would make it easier for Penangites to move between the island and Seberang Perai, thereby indirectly benefiting the Penang economy.

Previously, the caretaker Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow had announced in January that discussions about the proposed George Town-Butterworth LRT link will include both Anwar and Loke. The goal of this project is to connect the current island LRT line to the KTMB train line from Butterworth to Bayan Lepas.
