Prasarana Targets One Million KM, One Disruption Reliability Rate By 2026
Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) aims to achieve a Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF) rate of just one million kilometres by the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, significantly reducing train breakdowns.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke, while presenting the 2024 Prasarana Performance Report and 2025 plans, revealed that the number of train service disruptions decreased to 71 in 2024versus 118 in 2023. This marks a 33% improvement in train operations across the Kelana Jaya & Ampang LRT lines, Kajang and Putrajaya MRT lines and Monorail services.
Disruptions are classified as trains being stationary for over five minutes, with severe disruptions exceeding 15 minutes. “Although we’ve reduced disruptions, we’re far from satisfied. By 2026, Prasarana aims for an MKBF of just one disruption for every one million kilometres traveled,” said Loke.
“Reliability is key. Only by ensuring dependable service will public confidence in using public transport continue to grow,” he added.
Prasarana is also targeting a daily average of 1.4 million passengers by Dec 2025, a 10–12% increase in ridership post-COVID-19. Passenger numbers had already risen to 1.18 million daily in 2024, up 24% from 955,000 in 2023 and nearly back to pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
Additionally, revenue has also improved by 5% in 2024, mainly due to increased ridership. To boost earnings further, Prasarana is exploring new revenue streams such as advertising, station naming rights, and developing land assets.
The upcoming LRT3 line, connecting Shah Alam to Klang, is expected to further drive ridership growth.
