Proton ‘S70’ Spied with No Camouflage Wrap – Launch Imminent?
New spy shots of the alleged Proton S70 have surfaced online! (Photo credit: MizzJo via Facebook)
It is no secret that Proton is planning to launch a brand new sedan model, as revealed by numerous spy shots and rumours flying around the local automotive space. Ahead of its planned launch later this year, the alleged Proton ‘S70’ sedan has been spotted again, this time featuring no camouflage drape whatsoever.

Spotted by Facebook user MizzJo, the two Proton S70s spotted here appeared to be a baseline variant of the model, boasting no premium exterior equipment like elaborate body kits and a sunroof. However, keen eyes would notice that these two ‘S70s’ come standard in what appears to be LED projector headlights, while riding on snazzy-looking two-tone wheels.
Unfortunately, no photos of the rear-end of these two S70s were taken by said Facebook user, which might give us more indication on the car’s exact model and trim level. But nonetheless, these two photos might give us the clearest impression on the upcoming Proton sedan model so far, where we can see it sports similar front grille design as we’ve seen on the new Proton X90, aside from its conventional three-box sedan body style.
The new Proton S70 is based on the Geely Emgrand C-segment sedan
Previously rumoured to be named Proton S50, the alleged Proton S70 is based on the Geely Emgrand – a C-segment sedan by Geely that underpins the same BMA platform as the X50. Using the Proton X70 as a parallel, it is more logical for this future Proton C-segment sedan model to carry the S70 badge instead of S50, as the -50 suffix would be reserved for B-segmented models like the Proton X50 B-SUV.
It is possible that the S70 will employs the same 1.5-litre 3-cyl TGDI mill used on the X50
For the Chinese market, the Geely Emgrand is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cyl nat-asp mill for a good 114 PS and 147 NM total system output. For the Malaysian market, however, we’d reckon Proton will employ its locally-produced 1.5-litre 3-cyl TGDI mill rated at 177 PS and 255 NM on the X50 for the S70 so that it’ll be more viable against peppier segment rivals.
This is further supported by the fact that Proton had recently ended the production of its CamPro powertrain, with the marque’s newly-opened Tanjung Malim engine assembly facility now only producing said 3-pot turbocharged mill which is currently used by all of its Geely-based models.
Should Proton follow its usual pricing convention, we can expect the new Proton S70 to be priced slightly below its segment rivals, possibly within the RM90,000 to RM100,000 mark – putting it on par with fellow B-segment sedans like the Toyota Vios and Honda City. For reference, the previous Proton C-segment sedan fighter – the Proton Preve – is priced from RM70,000 onwards, which was on-par with fellow B-segment rivals of that time.
With the new Proton ‘S70’ now spotted with no camouflage skins, it is safe to assume that this new C-segment sedan is poised to make its debut sooner or later, at least by the end of this year…
