- Fifth-Gen Geely Emgrand Official Images Unveiled in China
The first official images of the new, fifth-gen Geely Emgrand saloon have surfaced in China. Future Proton S70 donor?
Chinese automotive giant Geely has published the first official images of the new, fifth-gen Geely Emgrand in China. For its next-gen iteration, the C-segment saloon is not only bigger but also features several new design bits and even a new powertrain lineup.
We’ll start with the dimensions, because the fifth-gen Emgrand has certainly grown significantly over the ongoing model. While the current Emgrand is often billed as a B- to C-segment saloon, the new model now spans 4,815 mm long, 1,885 mm wide, and 1,480 mm tall with a 2,755 mm wheelbase, thus edging it closer to the D-segment saloon category.
Design-wise, the new Emgrand gets a pretty substantial design overhaul, with the most prominent being its new front face that features sharper LED headlights, a new polygonal front grille with waterfall-style inserts, and a sportier front bumper design.
Moving further back, the new Emgrand also gets a sleeker rear-end with slim LED taillights, new Geely lettering instead of the standard badge, dual tailpipes, as well as several silver accents around the rear bumper. As it now stands longer, the new Emgrand also boasts a sportier side profile while rolling on new twin five-spoke alloy rims.
More changes can be seen inside the cabin of the new Emgrand, where the saloon now gets a larger 14.6-inch central infotainment screen and a smaller digital LCD cluster—both powered by the Flyme Auto OS.
Other key highlights include a new flat-bottomed steering wheel, several physical buttons on the central console, a crystal gear knob, a 50-watt wireless charger, a slew of chrome accents, a panoramic sunroof, dedicated rear A/C vents, and many more.
On the powertrain front, the new Emgrand will adopt the same 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol engine used on the new Coolray and the new Proton X50, rated at 178 hp and 290 Nm. While it is not specified, we can expect the saloon to get the same DCT automatic gearbox as the new X50, with Geely claiming a top speed of up to 200 km/h.
As of now, Geely has yet to confirm the exact launch date for the new Geely Emgrand, but we can expect it to happen later this year. With the Emgrand now getting a next-gen redux, perhaps it won’t be too long before we get to see the Proton S70 getting the same treatment.
