Honda officially begun the production of its HR-V-sized electric crossover SUV, the "e:N1," in Thailand, marking a significant milestone - it’s the first Japanese automaker to locally manufacture (CKD) a BEV in said kingdom.

The first batch of e:N1 units, assembled with locally sourced components, rolled off the production line at Honda's factory in Prachinburi's Rojana Industrial Park, sometime earlier this week.

The Japanese automaker further stated that specific details with regards to the model’s launch and distribution efforts would be disclosed in the first quarter (Q1) of 2024. Honda expressed its dedication to achieving its 2030 goal of producing a minimum of 2 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) globally.

The decision to manufacture the electric SUV in Thailand shows Honda’s confidence in said ASEAN kingdom’s automotive industry. Local production is anticipated to contribute to the industry's value by utilising locally produced parts and providing employment opportunities for local workers.

The e:N1 is expected to offer Thai car buyers an additional choice alongside vehicles featuring internal combustion engines and the H-marque’s signature e:HEV hybrid system, reflecting Honda's commitment to diversifying its product offerings.

Given its similar size as the combustion-powered HR-V, there is undoubtedly a good chance that this model will be introduced in Malaysia, perhaps by late 2024 or early 2025. In doing so, it could become Honda Malaysia’s first BEV offering to customers who are eager to convert towards an environmentally friendly electric option.

Reports thus far indicate that the e:N1 is projected to have a price tag of roughly THB1.5 million (approx. RM200,000) before factoring in government subsidies - up to THB100,000 (approx. RM13,000) in expected for the latter.
