Although the Ministry of Works (KKR) recognized that glow-in-the-dark road paint was necessary to improve road safety on the East-West Highway (Jeli-Gerik), they also realized that this solution would cost almost 20 times as much as the current standard approaches.

The cost of the glow-in-the-dark lines is still a major obstacle, according to Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, even though they looked great and got good reviews from users when they were first tested in Hulu Langat in November.

As opposed to standard road paint, which costs RM40 per square meter, the installation of these illuminated lines costs approximately RM749 per square meter. image-full_normal---2023-11-16T165635.655-full.jpg

Alexander emphasized that a comprehensive study, including a financial assessment, was necessary before proceeding. Even though these improvements are obviously needed on some highways, budgetary concerns must be taken into account.

If put into practice, it might only travel short distances and still present risks to other road users because of its high cost.

The Hulu Langat District Public Works Department (JKR) first introduced the glow-in-the-dark road line pilot project in Jalan Sungai Lalang, Hulu Langat, Selangor. Road dividers with light-reflective elements were also incorporated into this project.
