- Penang’s Island 88 Mall Gets 60 kW BMW i EV Charger
Island 88 is the latest in Penang's Georgetown to house new BMW i EV chargers. It consists of 1 60 kW DCFC plus 3 7.4 kW AC charging points.
The Island 88 mall (formerly Island Plaza) is the latest site in Penang’s capital of Georgetown to welcome a brand-new BMW i-branded 60 kW DC EV charging station. Alongside it too are a trio of 7.4 kW AC charging stations.
The new charging points were officially launched by YB Joshua Woo, State Assemblyman of ADUN Pulau Tikus, earlier this week.
Island 88's new BMW i EV chargers are powered by EVC's JomCharge. They are located in said shopping haven's sub-basement level.
Located at said mall’s sub-basement level, these were built in partnership between Island 88, EV Connection (EVC) via its JomCharge arm, as well as BMW Group Malaysia through dealers Tiang Siang Premium Auto.
Notably, this new BMW i-branded 60 kW DCFC now stands as the first of its kind to become operational in Penang’s Tanjong Tokong district. It also marks the first collaborative effort between Island 88 management with charge point operators EVC.
A quick check on the PlugShare app shows these new EV charging points at Island 88 are activated via the JomCharge app, and users with levied with time-based charges to use them. For the 60 kW DC charger, it costs RM1.20 per minute where as the three 7.4 kW AC chargers costs RM6 per hour instead.
For Island 88, these new EV chargers come as part of the shopping haven’s preparations to open its new wing. The latter is set to open to the public within this quarter (Q1) and feature a slew of notable new F&B experiences.

“Our aim is to facilitate the installation of more DCFC EV charging stations across Malaysia especially in Penang whereby EV facilities here are still scarce,” highlights EVC Managing Director Ir Lee Yuen How, at the official inauguration of Island 88’s new BMW i EV charging EV stations.
“These stations are strategically positioned at Island 88 to cater to the growing demand for electric mobility, ensuring that EV drivers can charge their vehicles quickly and efficiently," added Tan Ka Kin, Managing Director of Tian Siang Premium Auto, after inaugurating these new EV charging points.
