It seems a large number of Klang Valley motorists aren’t maintaining their vehicles well enough, at least according to the Selangor state road transport department (JPJ). Last year, Selangor JPJ enforcers issued a total of 349,289 summonses to motorists.

Said figure marks a 32% jump over the previous year (2022), which saw a total of 263,786 summonses issued.

Selangor JPJ director Azrin notes that the bulk of these vehicle technical offence summonses issued last year were for faulty signal lights and bald tyres. "Drivers aren't paying enough attention to their vehicles," he added.

Selangor state JPJ director Azrin Borhan recently told Bernama that the bulk of these summonses issued throughout last year – 111,827 of which – were for offences related to various vehicular technical faults. These include operating vehicles with bald tyres and having faulty signal lights.

In fact, the number of these vehicle technical fault summonses issued by Selangor JPJ in 2023 far outnumbered summonses issued for other offences like driving without a licence30,142 summonses – and riding a motorcycle with an expired motorcycle licence17,799 sumonses.

Azrin adds that Selangor state JPJ issued 30,142 summonses in 2023 to offenders for driving without a licence, and a further 17,799 summonses to offender for riding motorcycles with an expired motorcycle licence.

Azrin notes that the  increase in said offences involving compliance aspects stems from the simple fact that drivers aren’t paying enough attention to their vehicles. “We advise drivers to check their vehicles before starting any journey,” urged Azrin with Bernama earlier this week.

Certainly, this revelation by the state’s JPJ head should be cause for alarm. In fact, when was the last time you give your ride’s tyres and lights a proper look? This is also perhaps a good time to whip out your licence from your wallets and purses and check their expiration dates.
