The Kalmar 911 RS-6 Is A ‘Budget’ 911 Dakar Build

Fancy a 911 Dakar, but don't want to pay the exorbitant asking price? Danish coachbuilder Kalmar Automotive might just have the solution through its latest kit.

The firm just developed a high-performance off-roading Rally Special-6 (RS-6) kit for the newer 996-generation Porsche 911. Unlike other off-road conversions, which frequently use older, air-cooled models, the RS-6 is based on a more current water-cooled 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera 4, or 911 Turbo models instead.

The RS-6 transforms said 911 models through the additions like a limited-slip differential, and modified suspension system with inverted front shock absorbers, specific springs, new bushings, and a subframe kit to adjust the roll centre. Next comes a strut brace, beefier driveshafts, underbody protection plates, and 16-inch wheels with spiked Michelin tyres.

The suspension and tyres combination sees an additional 208 MM ground clearance which, unsurprisingly, surpasses the 911 Dakar's 161 MM. To reduce weight, Kalmar eliminated unnecessary interior components such as certain trim pieces and sound-deadening materials.

The latter sees the RS-6 weighs approximately 1,451 KG, which is only 136 KG more than a base 911 with a six-speed manual box. In retrospect, the 911 Dakar weighs in at a heavier 1,960 KG figure.

Altogether, the RS-6’s standard kit includes a pair of Recaro front seats, a cross towbar, six-speed gearbox with LSD, rear roll cage, lightweight interior options, roof-mounted spare wheel and jerry can holder, a roof-mounted LED light bar, a bespoke suspension lift kit and a set of narrow lightweight alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres.

However, those with deeper pockets can opt for the optional extras offered by Kalmar Automotive, which include a range of engine specifications and upgrades to push power beyond the 500 HP mark. Available too are adaptive shock absorbers with two axle lift function, race bucket seats, full roll cage, rally-specification fly-off handbrake, trip-master timing systems, and even a full ground-up vehicle restoration.

The entire RS-6 conversion process could take up to six months and start at around €45,000 (RM230,000). Take note that the cost of the donor car is not included in this price. Given how the values of earlier model 911s have steadily increased over time, some factions would undoubtedly call such conversion blasphemy, but we at CariCarz.com are simply in love with it!
