- BYD Singapore Inks Partnership With 5 CPOs – 5% To 20% Discount
BYD Singapore has announced partnerships with five EV Charge Point Operators (CPOs) in a bid to offer discounted EV charging rates to its customers. The CPOs included are Charge+, ComfortDelGro, Shell Recharge, SP Group, and Volt EV Charging.
The strategic alliance was formed with the specific goal of launching a discount programme that will provide appealing benefits to all BYD passenger vehicle owners, with charging discounts ranging from 5% to 20%.
This initiative is a concerted effort to assist electric vehicle owners in Singapore in transitioning to an EV lifestyle. By lowering charging costs, BYD hopes to make electric vehicle adoption more accessible and financially advantageous.
This not only aligns with the global trend of sustainable transportation, but it also contributes to lower operational costs for EV owners.
Before you get too excited about why Malaysia does not have such collaborations, keep in mind that, while the partnership has been signed with 5 CPOs, users can only receive the discount from one (locked), so they must choose wisely which CPO has the most charge points close to them.
This 20% off promotion with one CPO applies only to new BYD customers and will begin in April 2024, with the exception of Charge+, which has been collaborating with BYD since January 2024.
Aside from that, all BYD owners in Singapore will receive a 5% discount when they charge at any Volt charging network.
According to our understanding, users would still be required to perform all charging via the CPOs app, as opposed to Tesla (Supercharger) or Chery's (EV Connection) charging sessions, which can be completed automatically because the vehicle's VIN number is recognised at the charging point it is associated with.
A quick check on EVE.com reveals that ComfortDelGro has the most charging points in Singapore (732), followed by Charge+ (664), Shell Recharge (378), and SP Group (303). We are unable to determine the number of charging points owned by Volt EV Charging because no information is available on Google.
Having said that, we hope that as EV adoption increases, particularly in Malaysia, vehicle manufacturers will be able to collaborate with all available CPOs and integrate them into a network with special discounts. This would be more effective if brand-specific apps like the Hello smart app or automatic VIN-based recognition were available, as they are on the Chery Omoda E5.
