The next-gen Porsche Cayenne EV will arrive alongside the ICE-powered third-gen models later this decade.

It is no secret that Porsche is in the midst of replacing the current third-gen Cayenne with a new, next-gen model. For the first time ever, the Stuttgart-based marque has given us details and official teaser images of its upcoming flagship SUV model.

Starting off with the big one, the next-gen Cayenne is slated to arrive in a sole, all-electric (BEV) version for the first time in its history. More importantly, the new Cayenne EV will be sold alongside the current ICE-powered models. This means that in the next few years, the Cayenne will be available in three powertrain flavours, namely full ICE, hybrid, and EV.

“Porsche is simultaneously moving forward with the development of its powerful hybrid and combustion engine models. Up to and beyond 2030, the successful SUV will be offered with three powertrain variants worldwide,” Porsche’s official statement reads.

More on this upcoming SUV model, Porsche AG CEO Oliver Blume promises that customers will still be able to “choose from a wide range of powerful and efficient combustion and hybrid models," where the automaker will “further upgrade" the current third-generation Cayenne, which will remain available alongside its EV-only successor.

This also means that House Stuttgart is vowing to keep the ICE alive, meaning that we’ll get to see an improved version of the Cayenne’s twin-turbo V8 mill in future models. According to Porsche, its engineers at Zuffenhausen have applied “extensive technical measures” in order to make the V8 mill comply with the current emission standards.

With the current third-gen Cayenne set to be kept alive until the end of the decade, we can expect this beloved sporty SUV to get yet another facelift treatment in years to come, with the latest one given back in 2023. For context, the third-gen Cayenne was introduced globally back in 2017, meaning that the model will be more than 10 years old by the end of this decade.

More importantly, Porsche’s decision to keep the ICE-powered Cayenne alive signals that the automaker is taking a multi-pathway strategy towards its zero carbon footprint vision, just like what Toyota is doing. However, the CEO insisted that Porsche is still “firmly committed to electromobility," citing that the firm’s initial target of having 80% of its new car sales fully electrified in 2030 is still on, albeit with a caveat.

The caveat is that this target could be achieved “depending on the demand of our customers and the development of electromobility in the regions of the world,” thus signalling that Porsche is still keen on going with the multi-pathway strategy instead.

More on the next-gen Cayenne, this all-electric SUV is currently undergoing extensive road tests on public roads, with several camouflaged units set to cover “several million test kilometres all over the world under extreme climatic and topographical conditions.”

Just like the new Macan EV, the Cayenne EV will also underpin VW Group’s new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which will be further developed to deliver “Porsche driving characteristics, high-capacity and stable charging, high efficiency, and a high level of comfort and everyday usability.”
