The head of Toyota has declared that the company will not be extending its agreement to be an official partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The corporation's chair, Akio Toyoda, made a public announcement in May 2023 announcing that Toyota and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would not be renewing their "TOP" sponsorship agreement.

The first rumors surfaced in late May,  that Toyota was not going to renew its partnership with the IOC. Under the terms of the Toyota-IOC agreement, Toyota supplied a fleet of about 3,300 electric cars and mobility solutions for the late July and early August Olympics in Paris.

The agreement covered the Olympics in 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2024, With total estimated value of $835 million.
When Akio made the announcement through the Japanese automaker's media channel, questions were raised about whether or not athletes are given priority at the Olympics.

"With the increasing political undertone of the games, we were wondering if this was the right way to go," Toyoda stated. According to him, the company will keep using its foundation to assist both individual athletes and the International Paralympic Committee. Toyota sought to extend its sponsorship for the Paralympics exclusively after entering the contract in 2015, but the IOC refused to permit such a request.

Following several corruption scandals related to the Tokyo Games, a number of Japanese companies have cut ties with the IOC. Panasonic Holdings Corp. also announced this month that it will not renew its 37-year top-tier sponsorship contract with the IOC when it expires in December.
