- Volvo ES90 Teased: Official Reveal Mar 2025, 665 KM Range?
Volvo has officially teased its long-anticipated EV saloon model, cordially named the ES90. The new model is set to arrive in 2025 as the brand’s first fully electric saloon, marking a significant moment in its transition toward electrification.
The ES90 is positioned as the electric counterpart to the long-standing S90 and will take on rivals such as the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE in the premium electric saloon segment.
Unveiled during Volvo's "90/90 Day" event in Gothenburg, Sweden, the ES90 was shown briefly in a teaser video. While details of the car’s sedan body design seems to have drawn heavy design inspiration from the EX90, with Volvo’s familiar clean lines and minimalist styling as seen in the all new EX30, which is set to be launched in Malaysia later this month.
Though Volvo has not shared many specifics, the ES90 will ride on the same bespoke SPA2 platform, a dedicated EV platform and an evolution of the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) developed for the EX90 and also seen on the Polestar 3.
This platform benefits from a suite of advanced software and technology features. According to Autocar UK, leaked details suggest the ES90 will measure about five metres in length and will be available in both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations. It will also likely feature a 111-kWh (107 kWh usable) battery, similar to the EX90, promising substantial range and performance.
Based on data shown on the ev-database site, the ES90 just like the EX90 will come with 11 kW AC and 250 kW DC charging offering a WLTP range of between 335 KM to 665 KM. The Volvo ES90 which will be manufactured in China by Volvo’s parent company, Geely.
One intriguing design element from the teaser video was the silhouette of the ES90, which appeared on one side of a balancing see-saw, highlighting its role in Volvo’s balanced future of mobility as during the "90/90 Day" presentation Jim Rowan, President and CEO of Volvo Cars promised that Volvo will offer both the hybrid and EV options in its lineup to cater to its balanced demographic of buyers.
From the silhouette, we are able to also see that the ES90's glass area stood out with a distinctive, forward-positioned A-pillar and a high-deck, short trunk lid, indicating a fresh approach to saloon design in the electric age unlike the ongoing S90 model.
While no firm details on the ES90’s launch date was revealed, Volvo Cars website had stated that it will be officially revealed in March 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden and is set to become a key model in Volvo’s evolving new design language portfolio.
