Volvo EX90 Enters Production After Two Years Since Debut
After almost two years since making its debut, the Volvo EX90 EV SUV is finally going into production.
It’s been almost two years since Volvo unveiled its new flagship EV SUV, the Volvo EX90. Following months of delays and postponement, the EX90 is finally entering production at Volvo’s Charleston plant in South Carolina, US, where it will be ready for American customers later in the second half of 2024.
Initially, the EX90 was slated to commence production in early 2024, and it was expected to hit the market in the first quarter of the year. Unfortunately, due to some issues pertaining to its on-board software, the Swedish automaker was forced to postpone and delay its production a few months ahead.
Volvo EX90 flagship EV SUV
Making its first public appearance back in Nov 2022, the EX90 is touted to be the new, all-electric flagship SUV for Volvo, standing alongside the long-serving and much-beloved XC90. Underpinning the marque’s new SPA2 platform, which is essentially the upgraded version of the XC90’s SPA1, the EX90 harnesses a CATL-sourced battery pack rated at 111 kWh.
Despite boasting a 400-volt battery architecture, the EX90 can support DCFC at up to 250 kW, allowing its sizable battery pack to go from 10-80% of SOC in just 30 minutes.
As for its powertrain setup, the new EX90 is offered in either a single RWD or a dual-motor AWD version, with the latter capable of delivering up to 510 HP (380 kW) and 910 NM in the top-spec Performance form. The maximum EV range, on the other hand, is estimated to be in the 590–600 KM range (WLTP).
Besides decent performance, the flagship EX90 also features all the latest and greatest tech bits Volvo has to offer, with the SUV ready for Level 3 autonomous driving capability courtesy of its extensive arsenal of LiDARs, radars, and ultrasonic sensors. On top of that, the cabin’s 14.5-inch central infotainment display uses Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Cockpit Platform while being powered by the latest Google Built-In OS.
As we mentioned earlier, the all-new Volvo EX90 is poised to hit the North American market later in the second half of 2024, where it will be priced from $77,990 (RM366,124) onwards.
Closer to home, Volvo Cars Malaysia (VCM) has yet to reveal any plans to introduce its new flagship EV SUV this year. However, the automaker previously indicated that we might get the EX90’s smaller twin, the Volvo EX30, first ahead of its flagship model, possibly followed by the marque’s first MPV model, the Volvo EM90.
