- BYD Xia PHEV MPV Unveiled, Boasts 80KM EV Range
Details of BYD’s latest offering, the Xia plug-in hybrid (PHEV) MPV, has made their way online thanks to documents filed by the automaker with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Pre-sales for this new model, which is part of BYD’s Dynasty series, began in Sept, with an estimated retail price of RMB 289,000 (RM 192,000). The Xia boasts BYD's signature “Dragon Face” design, aligning it with other models in the Dynasty series. Its side profile is marked by integrated front and rear door handles, with a relatively flat roofline, contributing to a sleek, modern look. The rear features wraparound tail lights, a distinct hallmark of the Dynasty series, which adds to its bold aesthetic.
Measuring 5,145 MM long with a 3,045 MM wheelbase, 1,970 MM wide and 1,805 MM tall, the Xia offers ample space on board that’s comparable to luxury MPVs like the Toyota Alphard. The Xia is expected to ride on standard 18-inch wheels and will be available with several optional features, including a small sunroof, panoramic roof, front-side radar, and a rear spoiler equipped with a camera, according to CarNewsChina.
In terms of tech, the Xia comes equipped with the Yunnian-C intelligent damping control system and the DiLink 150 smart cockpit, promising a smooth ride and a highly connected driving experience. It will also feature BYD’s DiPilot intelligent driving system, enhancing its autonomous driving capabilities.
Under the hood, the Xia utilises BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol mill with a hybrid electric motor. The engine produces 115 kW (154 HP), while the hybrid electric motor setup delivers up to 200 kW (268 HP), ensuring solid performance for an MPV in its class.
The Xia comes equipped with a 20.39 kWh battery, providing a pure electric range of up to 80 KM. An alternative variant with a 38 kWh battery will also be available, offering an extended electric range of 145 KM and a rather frugal fuel economy average of 6.5 litres/100 KM.
Said to be priced at RMB 289,000 (RM 192,000), the Xia will be positioned as a more affordable option against premium MPVs like the Denza D9 and Zeekr 009, making it a strong contender in the mid-range market. With competitive pricing and advanced features, the Xia is expected to capture market share from more expensive rivals.
In Malaysia, the Zeekr 009 is slated for launch this Nov, while the Denza D9 is expected to arrive in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025. However, if BYD decides to bring the Xia to Malaysia, it could significantly disrupt the roll out of both offerings.
Additionally, its combination of features, pricing, and manufacturer-backed warranty could also appeal towards buyers of grey-import Toyota Alphard and Vellfire models, offering them a fresh alternative with modern hybrid tech complete with manufacturer backing.
