Reckless and dangerous driving topped the list of offences contributing to fatal accidents during the recent Deepavali travel period, according to Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, Director of Bukit Aman’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT).

Starting Oct 31, in just four days, 6,013 accidents and 60 fatalities were recorded nationwide.

During this period, JSPT conducted 388 operations across the country, leading to 97 arrests for various - 91 for violations under the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987,  3 under the Dangerous Drugs Act, 2 under the Penal Code and 1 for other offences. Additionally, 647 vehicles were also seized.

Yusri also went on to add that JSTP also carried out 119 “Ops Samseng Jalanan” operations over the same period, resulting in 45 arrests for reckless and dangerous driving under Section 42 (1) of the APJ 1987, false or fancy vehicle registration numbers and other violations. 328 motorcycles were also seized during “Ops Samseng Jalanan”.

However, on a positive note, Yusri noted that there has been a 10 percent decline in motorcycle accidents - 2,735 cases in Aug-Sept last year to 2,461 cases in the same period this year.

Additionally fatal motorcycle accident numbers had also dropped by 26.03%, with 321 fatal cases reported compared to 434 the previous year. This led to a significant reduction in deaths among motorcycle riders and pillion riders, with fatalities decreasing from 436 to 324 over the same period.

Yusri further emphasised that JSPT will continue its operations and enforcement efforts to address the high rate of motorcycle-related fatalities, aiming to ensure safer roads for all.
