During the recent CGS International's 17th Annual Malaysia Corporate Day forum, Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke detailed that his ministry (MOT) is proposing to implement a special electricity tariff for public transport operators.

Besides  aiming to help ease their financial burden, Loke further highlighted that current electricity rates for public transport are the same as those charged to businesses. He noted that this has made it financially challenging for operators in the sector.

Loke also added that one of the key initiatives the ministry is working on is advocating for a dedicated electricity rate for public transport providers, both public and private. This move aims to support the sector's growth and alleviate financial strain on operators.

He also acknowledged that current electricity charges are significantly high, with operators such as Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Prasarana spending between 30% to 35% of their operating costs just on electricity alone.

As for Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), electricity costs account for 35% of its operating expenses. Loke also emphasised that the proposed special tariff could provide substantial relief to operators, encouraging them to continue growing the public transportation system in the country.

This move by MOT will undoubtedly help public transport operators significantly lower their operating costs. However, at Carz.com.my, we believe it should come with certain caveats to ensure that these cost savings are reinvested into improving services.

We've observed on numerous occasions that trains and buses are not always well-maintained. Even station facilities such as lifts, often fall into disrepair. It's essential that any financial relief directly benefits passengers through better service and upkeep.
