Thanks to the sharp eyes of the folks over at Thailand’s Headlightmag.com, it seems the next generation Toyota Hilux pick-up truck has taken a step closer to reality. Moreover, we can also perhaps expect the new generation truck adopt a revised naming scheme.

Just before this week’s New Year celebrations, Toyota reportedly filed a new trademark patent with Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Properly (DIP) for the ‘Hilux Travo’ name. This is expected to be the new name for the successor to the current eighth-gen Hilux Revo model that’s been around since 2015.

Besides the new name, Headlightmag.com also reports that the upcoming new generation Hilux will make its global debut in Thailand sometime this year too. Initially, it was widely touted that Toyota might produce a reworked iteration of its latest-gen TNGA-based Tacoma pick-up truck that debuted in May 2023.

However, Headlight.com’s report indicate that this may not be the case. Instead, the site indicates that the new truck will feature a full redesign with completely new front and rear ends, and it will underpin an updated chassis and cabin structure that are both carried over from the current model.

What would you expect from the upcoming new-generation Hilux model?

A similar approach is already practiced with the ninth-gen Camry saloon, in fact. With that, we can also perhaps expect the new Hilux Travo to continue harnessing Toyota’s existing GD series turbo-diesel powertrains that are updated to meet Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards.

Regarding the latter, we also won’t discount the possibility of Toyota electing to field new mild-hybrid (MHEV) versions of said oil-burners too. Presently, the outgoing Hilux already has MHEV-powered versions offered in Europe, UK and Australia.

We’ll have more details as this new generation Hilux model continues to be developed. In the meantime, what would you expect from the new generation iteration of Toyota’s robust and dependable workhorse? Share your take in the comments below, as well as our social media pages…
