Toyota overtakes Tesla as the world’s most valuable car brand in 2024, with the EV marque dropping to fourth position.

Following a pandemic-induced performance decline, Toyota is now back on top, as the Japanese automaker is now ranked as the world’s most valuable car brand, according to the 2025 Brand Finance report. Toyota’s rise also sees Tesla drop to fourth place among car brands—a two-place drop from its previous position in the 2024 report.

Brand Finance estimates that Toyota is currently valued at $64.73 billion (RM286 billion), which is a significant increase of 23% from the $52.67 billion (RM256 billion) valuation recorded in the previous year. This increase has comfortably put Toyota ahead of other brands like Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai Group, who ranked third and fourth with $53 billion (RM235 billion) and $46.25 billion (RM205 billion) valuations, respectively.

As for Tesla, Brand Finance’s latest report saw the American automaker drop from $58.3 billion (RM259 billion) in 2024 to just $43 billion (RM191 billion). Part and parcel of Tesla’s declining performance for 2025 is due to its ageing product lineup, while Brand Finance also cited its controversial boss, Elon Musk, whose recent activities and opinions outside the car industry, including in the world of politics, have also contributed to this valuation decline.

Unlike your typical power rankings, Brand Finance’s calculations aren’t just based on stock performance or sales figures per se, but also factor in feedback from thousands of surveys designed to highlight attitudes to the brands, as well as other external factors.

While Toyota’s rise in performance is applaudable, the Japanese automaker is still far behind other companies in Brand Finance’s overall list, with tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Google claiming the top three spots at $574.5 billion (RM2.556 trillion), $461.1 billion (RM2.052 trillion), and $356.4 billion (RM1.586 trillion) valuations, respectively. For reference, the Japanese automaker ranked 18th in the overall list, with Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai Group, and Tesla all ranked 23rd, 29th, and 36th, respectively.
