- Previewed: MG S5 EV – Two Variants, 430 KM Range, Est. RM115K
The upcoming MG S5 EV boasts up to 430 KM of WLTP range, tentatively priced from RM115,000 onwards.
MG Motor Malaysia (SAIC Motor Malaysia) today previewed its latest all-electric model, the MG S5 EV. This all-electric crossover will join the burgeoning B-segment electric SUV market space, offering rear-wheel drive dynamics and the practicality of an SUV for a tentative price of RM115,000.
For the Malaysian market, the S5 will get two powertrain variants, with the baseline model featuring a 49-kWh battery pack that juices its single RWD motor rated at 168 HP (125 kW) and 250 NM for up to 340 KM of WLTP range. Meanwhile, the up-specced variant uses the same RWD motor setup while benefiting from a larger 62-kWh battery pack that extends its WLTP range to 430 KM.
Charging-wise, the local-spec MG S5 comes equipped with 6.6 kW AC charging, while DC fast charging is capped at 150 kW for the top-spec variant.
In terms of visuals, the MG S5 stood as a sleek EV SUV crossover with tons of familiar design cues derived from other MG models. Key design highlights include a grill-less front face with large lower air intakes, dual-stack LED headlights, a full-width LED taillight bar, 17- or 18-inch wheels (depending on variant), a roof-mounted spoiler, and many more.
Not to forget, a total of five exterior colorways will be available for the S5 EV, namely Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red, and Elegant Latte.
In terms of sizing, the MG S5 EV is on par with other B-segment EV SUVs in our market.
Dimension-wise, the MG S5 is on par with other entry-level EV SUVs in our market, spanning 4,476 MM long, 1,849 MM wide, 1,621 MM tall, and 2,730 MM wheelbase. For reference, the BYD Atto 3, which is the best-selling model in this segment, measures 4,455 MM long, 1,875 MM wide, 1,615 MM tall, and a wheelbase of 2,720 MM.
On board, the MG S5 gets the same cabin setup as its smaller hatch twin, the MG 4. Some key amenities primed here include a 12.8-inch central infotainment screen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital metre cluster, leather and fabric combination seats with MG perforated pattern, a heated leather steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, a six-speaker audio system, and many more.
On paper, the MG S5 EV seems to not skimp on safety, as it comes with standard safety features like seven airbags, a 360-degree camera view system, and a host of ADAS functions.
Fully imported (CBU) from China, the all-new MG S5 EV is tagged with an estimated starting price from RM115,000 onwards before registration fees and insurance. We can expect to learn more about the S5 EV as we get closer to its debut date at the upcoming Malaysia Autoshow 2025 (MAS 2025).
