The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has announced a rebound in vehicle sales for May 2025, with a Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 68,007 units. This marks a 12.4% increase from the 60,527 units sold in April 2025, reversing the previous month’s holiday-induced slowdown.

MAA attributed the improved performance to several factors, including a higher number of working days in May compared to April, sustained promotional campaigns, and the continued delivery of vehicles from orders made during the first quarter of the year.

Despite the month-on-month recovery, May 2025 sales reflected a 3% decline compared to the 70,254 units sold in the same month last year. Passenger vehicle (PV) sales reached 62,757 units, down 3% year-on-year (YoY), while commercial vehicle (CV) sales fell by 11% to 5,250 units.

On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, the total number of vehicles sold as of May 2025 stood at 316,737 units, a 5% decline from the 333,309 units recorded in the same period in 2024. Passenger vehicles made up 295,213 units (-3% YoY), while commercial vehicles contributed 21,524 units, representing a sharper drop of 23% from the year before.

In terms of production, May 2025 saw a total of 65,970 vehicles manufactured of which 62,291 were passenger vehicles and 3,679 commercial vehicles, marking a 12% decline from the 74,609 units produced in May 2024.

Cumulatively, vehicle production from Jan to May 2025 stood at 299,886 units, also down 12% from 342,344 units in the same period last year.

MAA noted that the overall production trend continues to be weighed down by lower commercial vehicle output and ongoing realignment of manufacturing operations.

Looking ahead, MAA forecasts a dip in June 2025 TIV, citing a planned one-week plant shutdown by several major marques during the Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday period as a likely contributor to reduced sales and production.
