The all-new Toyota bZ5 EV breaks cover in China, featuring a sleek coupe crossover bodystyle.

Toyota has expanded its electric vehicle lineup in China further by launching the all-new Toyota bZ5. Borne out of Toyota’s partnership with Chinese automaker FAW, this new all-electric coupe crossover uses the same e-TNGA platform as both the bZ3 and bZ4X, while its LFP battery is sourced from BYD.

Four variants of the bZ5 are available in China, featuring two battery specs. The entry-level models use a smaller 65.28-kWh LFP pack from BYD for up to 550 km of CLTC range, while the larger 73.984-kWh unit is primed on long-range variants of the bZ5, granting them up to 630 km of CLTC range. Both batteries can be charged via a 90 kW DCFC, allowing them to go from 30% to 80% in just 27 minutes.

Regardless of variants or battery options, all China-spec bZ5s are powered by the same front-mounted (FWD) single electric motor that delivers 268 hp (200 kW) and 330 Nm. As of now, no official performance figures were disclosed by FAW Toyota, so your guesses were as good as ours at this point.

Design-wise, the new bZ5 looks largely similar to its pre-production version, the Toyota Sport Crossover concept, as it adopts a sporty coupe crossover bodystyle with a rakish rear windscreen and sleek side profile. Some familiar Toyota design features are also primed here, including the hammerhead front face and the C-shaped LED lights on both ends.

Other design cues primed here include 21-inch alloy wheels, hidden door handles, a small ducktail roof spoiler, and many more.

Dimension-wise, Toyota positions the bZ5 as their midsize crossover, as it spans 4,780 mm long, 1,866 mm wide, 1,510 mm tall, and a wheelbase of 2,880 mm. This puts the bZ5 above the bZ4X and on par with other midsize EV SUV crossovers in China, such as the Xpeng G6, the Tesla Model Y, and many more.

In a typical Chinese EV fashion, the new bZ5 adopts a clean, minimalist cabin design laced with tons of modern amenities and creature comforts. Key highlights include a large 15.6-inch central infotainment screen, a smaller digital instrument cluster, a triple-spoke steering wheel borrowed from the bZ4X, a full panoramic glass roof, multi-colour ambient lights, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, and many more.

On the safety front, the new bZ5 adopts the Toyota Pilot ADAS suite, which uses up to 33 sensing components, including a LiDAR unit on top of its roof. Combined with its fast computing power, Toyota claims this setup grants the bZ5 more than 30 ADAS functions, including Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) across varied driving scenarios.

Pricing for the all-new Toyota bZ5 starts at CNY 129,800 (RM76,588) for the baseline 550 Joy variant, while the 630 Pro tops the lineup at CNY 159,800 (RM94,289). And just like other Toyota EVs in China, the new bZ5 will be a Chinese exclusive, at least for now.
