The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is urging the public, especially residents in Kedah, to fully utilise the new Bas.My bus service launched under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme.

Speaking at the official launch of Bas.My in Kota Setar, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government has committed RM78.5 Million over five years (RM15.7 Million annually) to operate 13 SBST routes in Kedah. However, continued funding depends on public support.

“To justify continued allocations from the Finance Ministry, we need to show this service truly benefits the people,” Loke said. “If people don’t use it despite its affordability and convenience, it will be difficult to expand further.”

The service, which began on June 1, has already recorded over 30,000 monthly users and ridership is expected to reach 40,000 by the end of July, higher than initial projections.

Bas.My Kota Setar covers 13 routes across five local council areas including Alor Setar, Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Pendang, and Sungai Petani. A total of 48 new buses are being used, including 6 midi buses and 42 mini low-floor buses.

Designed to be more accessible, the bright pink buses feature low-floor entry for the elderly and persons with disabilities, CCTV for safety, LED displays for routes, and cashless payment options via debit cards, credit cards, or e-wallets.

A RM50 monthly unlimited travel pass (Kad 30 Hari) is available for Malaysians, offering savings of up to 74% for regular commuters. Concession cards offering free rides are also available for students including university and college students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Additionally, the Bas.My Medik initiative will provide door-to-door services for wheelchair users heading to medical appointments like dialysis or clinic visits.

To improve passenger experience, the ministry is also rolling out standardised bus stop designs and a new website (bas.my), where users can check routes, schedules, and fare information.

Loke emphasised that while federal funding supports operations, local authorities must also play their part in building infrastructure like proper bus stops, signage and safe pedestrian paths.
