Starting Jan 1, 2026, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will require all motor vehicles with additional electrical wiring to have a certified Electrical Wiring System (IWS(e)) document.

The move is aimed at ensuring all electrical installations are carried out safely and only by certified PW2 Electrical Technicians registered with JPJ. It aligns with new safety guidelines introduced for vehicles with aftermarket electrical systems.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said vehicle owners must present the IWS(e) document during inspections at Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centres (PPKM).

For buses that have already had electrical installations done before Jan 2026, a one-year grace period will be granted. During this time, operators must submit the required documentation and apply for approval through JPJ-registered coachbuilders only.

He stressed that any electrical wiring work carried out at workshops not recognised by JPJ will not be allowed under the new rules.

The new regulation follows a tragic incident in Nov 2024, where a teenager was electrocuted in an express bus at the Penang Sentral terminal.

In a separate update, Aedy Fadly revealed that 1,427 violations were recorded during a special seatbelt operation carried out between July 1 and 21. Of these, 968 involved drivers not wearing seatbelts, 140 involved front passengers, and 218 were for vehicles with missing or unfastened seatbelts.

Most of the offences were linked to public service vehicles, particularly express buses and tour vans.
