Construction of the new Marang Bridge, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2024/10/budget-2025-overview-ev-incentive-ron95-subsidy-more" target="_blank" style="">aimed at improving travel between Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by January 2027.</a>According to <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2024/03/nanta-rm33-billion-needed-to-fix-maintain-federal-roads" target="_blank">Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi</a>, the project had reached 54.7% completion as of June 30.“This is it, no more extensions,” he said during a recent site visit. “All land acquisition issues have been resolved, and work is moving forward as planned.”

The RM338 million project, led by the Public Works Department (JKR), includes a 2.5km realignment along Federal Route 3, a 680-metre flyover to divert traffic around Marang town, a 220-metre bridge across Sungai Marang, and upgrades to 1.5km of existing roads.
Built in the 1950s,  the current bridge has long been a traffic bottleneck, particularly during rush hours. It will be replaced by a modern four-lane structure designed to handle higher traffic volume and reduce congestion for east coast motorists.But the benefits go beyond smoother traffic. With increased clearance, the new bridge will also support the local fishing community by allowing larger Zone C vessels to pass upstream, a move expected to improve accessibility and strengthen the region’s maritime and fisheries economy.

He also noted that while digital inspection tools are helpful, they can't replace expert checks or a verified history report.

Meanwhile, Saravanan Thambirajah, CEO of FOMCA, said buyers often fall victim to hidden damage and misleading claims.“Most complaints come months after the purchase, when buyers find out the car had been in an accident or flood,” he said. “Dealers use ‘as-is’ clauses to avoid responsibility, and consumers don’t always understand the risks.”Saravanan welcomed the <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2024/02/used-car-dealers-can-now-transfer-ownership-of-vehicles-online-loke" target="_blank" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">government's move to propose a Lemon Law,</a> calling it long overdue.“It’s not just about breakdowns, it’s about fairness,” he said. “We need strong enforcement to make sure it works, not just on paper.”

A total of 22 drivers have been caught for providing illegal <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2025/06/klia-goes-electric-with-grabs-ev-fleet" target="_blank" style="">ride-hailing services</a> in two of Singapore’s busiest locations, Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay.

The <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2025/07/grab-and-a2z-rolls-out-autonomous-shuttle-in-one-north" target="_blank">Land Transport Authority (LTA)</a> said the drivers were operating without a Public Service Vehicle Licence (PSVL), a mandatory requirement for offering commercial rides, including cross-border trips into Malaysia.

“Commuters should steer clear of these unlicensed services,” the LTA cautioned in a Facebook post. “They not only lack insurance coverage but also pose serious safety risks. On top of that, they hurt the income of properly licensed drivers".

All vehicles involved in the crackdown were seized. However, the LTA has yet to confirm whether the cars were Singapore-registered or from abroad.

According to the agency, the operation was launched following tip-offs from the National Private Hire Vehicles Association and concerned members of the public. Many expressed worry over the risks of boarding vehicles that do not meet safety and insurance standards.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling also addressed the matter in a Facebook update on July 12. She stressed that enforcement would continue and intensify in both frequency and scope. “Repeat offenders may face tougher penalties,” she warned, including the permanent confiscation of their vehicles.

This isn’t the first time the LTA has cracked down on such practices. In December last year, 12 drivers were detained for running unauthorised rides between Singapore and Malaysia. Several of the vehicles seized in that operation were foreign-registered.

LTA reminded the public that only licensed taxis, approved by both Singapore’s LTA and Malaysia’s Land Public Transport Agency, are allowed to operate cross-border. In addition, Malaysian taxis must hold an <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2025/07/loke-no-ets-for-east-coast" target="_blank">ASEAN Public Service Vehicle Permit.</a>

To keep things fair for local drivers, these licensed cross-border taxis can only pick up passengers from the Ban San Street Terminal in Rochor and are not allowed to offer regular ride-hailing services within Singapore.
