JLR CEO Adrian Mardell reportedly retired this week following a 35-year stint, and right after the firm posted its most profits in ten years.

After a 35-year stint, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) CEO Adrian Mardell has retired, reports UK title Autocar UK.

"Adrian Mardell has expressed his desire to retire from JLR after three years as CEO and 35 years with the company. His successor will be announced in due course,” said JLR in a statement cited by the UK title mentioned.

Mardell helmed the position of CEO in 2023 following the sudden departure of predecessor Thierry Bolloré. Mardell then led both the Jaguar and Land Rover brands through one of its most ‘transformative’ periods in their respective histories – and that’s putting it lightly.

JLR says a successor will named "in due course." Mardell is being credited by observers for the firm's remarkable post-pandemic financial turnaround.

Mardell had effectively steered JLR through what observers hail as a remarkable financial turnaround. The firm experienced heavy losses and racked up a huge debt following the pandemic. JLR preservered and fought to chart its best profit figures in a decade last year (2024).

The dramatic change in the company's fortunes were largely underpinned by the popularity of highly profitable product nameplates, namely the Defender and Range Rover luxury SUVs, which have placed JLR on track to achieve a targeted 10% profit margin by 2026.

Notably, Mardell had also oversaw the group’s novel ‘House of Brands’ retail strategy. Through which, the firm’s Defender, Discovery, Range Rover and Jaguar marques were built as their own brands, complete with bespoke marketing strategies centred around their positioning.

Another milestone under Mardell's leadership was the Jaguar brand's rather controversial rebrand, which also spawned the Type 00 concept pictured.

Another significant moments under Mardell’s tenure was the debut of Jaguar Type 00 concept, which followed the marque’s controversial rebranding exercise to become an EV-only marque.

Mardell even told Autocak UK that Jaguar “will have wait lists which are significant relative to the volumes we aspire for with the first product.”

Besides the upcoming battery-electric Jaguar mentioned, JLR are also in the midst of readying the Range Rover Electric, which has been delayed to 2026 partly to allow demand for which to increase.
