Plans to improve KTM Berhad’s passenger train services are running into a few roadblocks, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

In a written reply to Kampar MP Chong Zhemin, Loke explained that the current service constraints are caused by three key issues which are a shortage of trainsets, limited track access, and speed restrictions due to ongoing upgrades.

“Speed limits are especially tight in areas with active infrastructure and signalling works like the Klang Valley, Gemas-Johor Bahru, and the East Coast line,” he said.

The minister noted that KTMB’s ability to roll out better schedules depends on the condition of its rail infrastructure and the availability of trains. WhatsApp-Image-2022-08-29-at-8.50.43-PM-e1661781101764.jpeg
“To increase frequency, we need enough functioning trainsets, and the tracks must be in optimal condition to allow trains to run at full speed,” Loke added.

To address the shortage, the government awarded a contract to CRRC Rolling Stock Center (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd on March 20 to supply 12 new three-car electric train sets for the Northern Komuter line.

These trains are aimed at easing growing demand in the northern sector, where daily ridership has jumped by 29% from 12,668 in 2023 to over 16,300 this year.

The ministry is also exploring trainset leasing to speed up the improvements. p20-21-KTMB-full_normal.jpg
“For now, service upgrades will be rolled out in stages depending on how quickly new trains arrive and infrastructure work wraps up,” Loke concluded.
