Honda has shared new details regarding its next-gen hybrid platform, which will be underpinned by the new Civic & CR-V.

Right after showcasing an array of futuristic concepts and prototypes at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (JMS 2025), Honda has now unveiled new details regarding its next-gen hybrid vehicle platform. With a focus on making their hybrids more fun to drive, this new architecture will serve as a backbone for their future hybrid models, including the next-gen Civic, CR-V, HR-V, Accord, and many more.

To achieve this, Honda engineers have put a lot of effort into making the new architecture more rigid and lightweight than before. As a result, the automaker said it has managed to reduce the platform’s overall weight by 90 kg compared to the current setup. This lightweightness not only will help to deliver a more engaging drive but also help in its fuel efficiency, Honda said.

In addition to that, Honda has also drawn on its robotic expertise to introduce a new Motion Management System, which is developed to enhance stability and steering response in their future hybrids. Complementing this new system is an upgraded Agile Handling Assist system that is now paired with a pitch control feature to deliver a steadier ride across a variety of road surfaces.

Another focus for this new platform is modularity, where it has been designed to allow for more than 60% parts commonality between models. This will not only help Honda to streamline the development and manufacturing of their future hybrid models but also reduce the costs for both.

Next-Gen Honda Civic Hybrid test mule

To get us excited about this new hybrid architecture, Honda has fitted the platform into a camo-wrapped Civic mule. While its rear end looks similar to the current FE-gen Civic sedan, the mule car rocks a noticeably bulkier front end with a boxier front bumper design and a longer overhang. On top of that, the mule also gets extended fenders that hint at wider tyre tracks, plus dual tailpipes and a sculpted front hood for a sportier appearance.

Beneath that hood, we’ve been told that the next-gen hybrid architecture will feature a 2.0-litre petrol engine that is augmented with electric motors, offering better performance and efficiency over the current setup. For added sportiness, it will also borrow certain traits from the new Prelude, including the Honda S+ Shift system that mimics gear changes through sound and torque modulation.

Honda Super-One EV prototype

Interestingly, the S+ Shift system will also trickle down to Honda’s future EVs, including the stylish Super-One EV prototype unveiled at the JMS 2025. More specifically, this sporty urban EV hatch will feature a seven-speed simulated transmission setup, plus both the active sound control system and a Boost driving mode to help deliver a more exhilarating driving experience in an otherwise ‘boring’ EV.

Ultimately, Honda’s pursuit of a better and more efficient hybrid system is part of its ambitious carbon neutral plan. By 2025, Honda intends to achieve full carbon neutrality across all its vehicles and corporate operations, while aiming to ensure traffic collisions involving its motorcycles and cars will result in zero fatalities.
