- Will "Made-in-Malaysia" BYD EVs Become A Reality Soon?

The electric vehicle landscape in Malaysia is shifting fast, and a high-stakes corporate meeting across the sea signals big moves on the horizon.
A leadership team from Sime Motors recently traveled to Shenzhen, China, to meet directly with top brass at BYD headquarters. According to Sime Motors, the strategic visit was arranged "to strengthen collaboration, facilitate knowledge transfer and in-depth discussions to support BYD’s continued growth in Malaysia."
The company added that the meeting provided a key opportunity for both teams to "align on strategic priorities and identify areas of mutual interest in support of Malaysia’s growing mobility ecosystem," reaffirming its commitment to driving local automotive development.
From Tanjong Malim Delays To A Kedah Pivot

BYD originally aimed to build a standalone manufacturing plant in Tanjong Malim, Perak. However, project timelines stalled, leading to policy discussions with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) regarding manufacturing license conditions and local vendor targets.

Shortly after, BYD’s Asia-Pacific leadership toured Sime Motors’ Inokom assembly facilities in Kulim, Kedah. Contracting assembly out to an existing, experienced facility allows BYD to bypass the long runway of building a factory from scratch, giving them a fast track to local production.
Tying these pieces together, the Shenzhen meeting strongly hints at a local assembly deal that could bring "Made-in-Malaysia" BYDs to our roads much sooner than expected.
