Having earlier announced a humanoid robot concept during the first Tesla AI Day in 2021, Elon Musk has now teased that a working prototype is on its way.
Happening sooner than expected, Tesla Optimus, the humanoid AI, is slated for an unveiling at Tesla AI Day two this September 30.
According to an interview by Bloomberg’s editor-in-chief, John Micklethwait, Musk said “I hope that we will have an interesting prototype to show people. We have a very talented team at Tesla that I’m working with closely to have a prototype humanoid robot ready by the end of September. And I think we are tracking to that point.”
The Optimus has potential of overtaking the EV business Musk claimed, as Tesla is evolving from just being an electric car manufacturer to a real-world AI company.
“We have these sort of AI Day events to just emphasize that Tesla is a lot more than a car company and that we are, in my view, the leading real-world AI company that exists,” Musk furthered.
With endless possibilities to what it can achieve, Tesla Optimus measures up to the average human. 5 feet-8 inches, friendly and is supposed to take over mundane human tasks.
Also, the Tesla boss believes that humanoid robots can actually be a very good companion, which have a personality that could evolve to be a great match.
He concluded, “It’s not quite in Tesla’s primary mission of accelerating sustainable energy, but it is an extremely useful thing that we can do for the world, which is to make it a useful humanoid robot that is capable of interacting with the world and helping in many different ways.”
Though, how this would fair in the real world is something to look forward to. Especially with Musk’s undelivered past promises. I.e., the SpaceX endeavours and Tesla robotaxis.
Be it so, some of the milestones that he is currently working on significantly outweigh those few setbacks.
Such as his alliance with NASA for commercial crew transport, the Starlink is operational and Dragon spacecraft is now the cargo delivery partner for the International Space Station (ISS).
That said, Tesla is also expected to divulge new details about its self-driving electric vehicles on the same day at the event.
