Unveiled Exclusively For China, Buick’s All-New Electric SUV Concept, The Electra-X
The premium car brand under General Motors, Buick, has revealed a new electric SUV concept exclusively for China, dubbed the Electra-X concept.
This all-new EV SUV concept serves as an insight into the brand’s future design direction, including a new badge, significantly modified for the first time since 1990.
Gandering at the Buick Electra-X concept, its distinct elements come in the form of a forward-leaning front end, a trapezoidal grille and ‘check mark’ taillights.
According to Buick, the concept is capable of projecting information to the side or rear of the vehicle to warn pedestrians, and its 21-inch wheels have an aerodynamic design that maximizes range.
Inside, the interior appears to be free of all switchgears, with control functions apparently handled by touchpads on the center console and armrests.
Then, to further lower the vehicle's environmental impact, all four seats are upholstered in fabric made from recycled plastic bottles.
Infotainment-wise, a 30-inch screen stretches across about half the dashboard and features 6K resolution and 5G connectivity.
It runs Buick's new Virtual Cockpit System that uses a QUALCOMM Snapdragon 8155 chip and features over-the-air (OTA) update capability.
Besides that, the Electra-X concept also has GM's Super Cruise hands-free driver-assist system, and the iKey, Buick's smartphone-as-key technology.
Further specifications are unknown, but it is said that the concept is based on GM's Ultium battery and motor architecture.
Although its production is still in discussion, some of its styling elements will likely appear on future Chinese-market EVs based on the same Ultium component set.
Notably, Buick plans to launch five new EVs in China by 2025, and in North America, the brand aims to go all-electric by the end of the decade.
That said, its first North American EV will appear in 2024, and EVs for this market will use the Electra name along with an alphanumeric suffix to denote size and body style.
