Hyundai & GM Partner Up to Develop Five New Models

Hyundai has partnered with America’s GM to develop five new models, including two pick-up trucks and an EV van.
Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Group has announced a partnership with General Motors (GM) to work on five new models together. Those five new models will include two pick-up trucks, a compact SUV, a compact car, and an EV van, where all of them will share the same platform while featuring their own distinct design and interior.

Chevrolet Colorado mid-size pick-up truck
We’ll start with the two pick-up trucks, and no surprise, GM will take the lead on the development of these two new models, which will debut sometime in 2028. What we know so far is that both of them will be mid-size pick-up trucks with both full combustion (ICE) and hybrid powertrain options, but unfortunately these models will only cater to the Central and South American markets.
Again, not many details were given about these two mysterious pick-ups, but given that GM will be taking the developmental lead, perhaps there’s a high chance that these trucks will be based on GM’s own midsize pick-up trucks, such as the Chevrolet Colorado.

Hyundai Tucson SUV
As for the remaining three models, Hyundai will be taking the lead on their respective development, where the two compact models will also be available in both ICE and hybrid versions. Again, no details were given on the exact models, but the rumour mill suggests that something like the Hyundai Tucson could come into the contention.

As for the EV van, it will likely be based on one of Hyundai Motor Group’s electric commercial vans, with rumours suggesting that it could be either the Hyundai ST1 or the radical Kia PV5 commercial EV van. Interestingly, the EV van will also be the only model heading to the North American market, with its production set to take place in the US later in 2028.

Both Hyundai and GM have put up pretty ambitious goals for these five new models, with an annual sales target of over 800,000 units. Given that these models will share their platforms with existing Hyundai or GM models, the companies hope that the models will be more affordable and cost-effective while providing consumers with more choice and value.
Beyond the product co-development, this partnership will also see Hyundai and GM working together in areas such as material sourcing, transport and logistics in North and South America, plus raw materials, components, complex systems, and low-carbon-emissions steel.

“This strategic collaboration with GM will help us continue to deliver value and choice to our customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets. Our combined scale in North and South America helps us to more efficiently provide our customers more of what they want—beautifully designed, high-quality, safety-focused vehicles with technology they appreciate,” said Hyundai CEO José Muñoz.
Meanwhile, GM senior VP Shilpan Amin said, “By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster and at a lower cost. These first co-developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale.”
