Jaguar Debuts Latest I-Type 6 Gen3 Formula E Racer

The ABB FIA Formula E championship is the undisputed pinnacle of EV racing, with the 2023 edition being the ninth season of this prestigious championship. It also sees Formula E usher a new era of Gen3 cars, offering teams a level playing field as they’ll scour through the new technical regulations to conjure up their best iteration.

Racing under Jaguar TCS Racing in Formula E, Jaguar has officially revealed its Gen3 racer, dubbed as the I-Type 6. Lighter and faster than the old-gen Jag, the British marque claims the I-Type 6 is their “most advanced and efficient electric Jaguar race car ever.”

Set to make its racing debut later in Jan 2023, the I-Type 6 is the Gen3 Formula E racer that boasts front and rear powertrains. Similar to the Porsche 99X Gen3, bulk of the Gen3 car’s power comes from its rear powertrain that produces 350 kW (470 HP). Meanwhile, the front motor provides ‘back-up’ power via regenerative braking, capable of delivering up to 250 kW (335 HP) of regenerative power.

In total, the Gen3 Jaguar I-Type 6 can generate up to 600 kW (804 HP) of power – essentially doubling its predecessor’s power regeneration capability.

Absent in the Gen3 racer is the conventional rear braking system, which is now deemed obsolete as the car’s front axle comes with its own powertrain. To wit, bulk of the Gen3 car’s stopping power comes from the rear motor’s regenerative capability that doubles that of its predecessor, while the ‘normal’ front brakes play as second fiddle.

Aside from the improved powertrain, the I-Type 6 is also 74 KG lighter than the Gen2 Formula E car it succeeds. Coupled with said powertrains’ output, the lighter Gen3 I-Type 6 can reach a top speed of 322 KM/H.

Similar to its Gen3 rival, the Porsche 99X, the I-Type 6 boasts a triangular overall shape that is fine-tuned to provide ample downforce. Other bits deleted in the Gen3 car are the wheel covers, thus giving it a more ‘authentic’ open-wheel racer look, akin to its big ‘brother’, the Formula 1.

As the new season beckons, the I-Type 6 will be donning Jaguar TCS Racing’s latest livery, with both cars featuring asymmetrical designs. Carbon black and white dominate both car’s design, while the addition of gold accents helps in splitting those two hues apart.

Said asymmetrical design means fans will be able to tell Jag’s drivers – Mitch Evans and Sam Bird – apart. Both drivers have been part of Jaguar TCS Racing team since the 2020-21 season, and the team is set to retain said pair for the upcoming season.

As a long-time member of Jag’s racing family, Mitch Evans is set to compete in his seventh Formula E season with Jaguar, which was previously known as Panasonic Jaguar Racing. The Kiwi has achieved his best-ever overall result last season where he finished as runner-up in the drivers’ standings.

Briton Sam Bird is enroute for a redemption, as he was forced out for two rounds in last season’s championship after sustaining a broken hand during the London ePrix. Bird’s injury-laden season sees him finish 13th in drivers’ standings, as the Brit is determined to make his third season with Jaguar a better one.

The 2023 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship kicks-off next year with the season-opening Mexico City ePrix on Jan 14, 2023. A total of 17 grand prix will be raced next year, taking place in 12 different cities.
