This year at one of the world’s most exclusive motoring events, Passione Engadina, Bugatti’s achievements were rejoiced with an exceptional ensemble of its icons.
A unique ‘Pavillon Bugatti’ gathered 13 rare examples outside the Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz, while another collection of historic Bugattis embarked on the Julius Baer rally.
Then, for an epic conclusion, a dynamic presentation of the Chiron Super Sport was also demonstrated at the Samedan Airport.
Passione Engadina - Pavillon Bugatti
1. Type 1 Prinetti Stucchi
Created while he was just 17, this motorized tricycle, the Type 1 Prinetti Stucchi, was the first ever project engineered by Ettore Bugatti.
He developed it during his time employed at Prinetti Stucchi, and the tricycle is equipped with two De Dion Mono-Cylinder engines on a Rochet-Schneider chassis.
2. Bugatti Type 13 Roadster
Perhaps the most iconic, the Type 13 Roadster was the first revolutionary four-wheeled project from Ettore, and the first car wearing the Bugatti brand.
Sporting a four-cylinder engine with an eight-valve design, it helped in creating a powerful, lightweight car that would go on to beat much bigger and more powerful motorsport competitors.
3. Bugatti Type 35 B
The Type 35 is renowned as one of the most successful racing cars of all time, with a record of over 2000 victories in its career.
For the exhibition, the Type 35 B displayed was raced by Louis Chiron, a driver that also gave his name to the Bugatti model launched in 2016.
4. Bugatti Type 57 SC Atalante
Notably, this example is regarded as one of the most valuable and iconic Bugattis ever created, pairing a beautiful design with a powerful supercharged engine and sporty, low-slung chassis.
Only few other vehicles produced before or since can match the Type 57 SC Atalante’s combination of luxury, performance and elegance.
5. Bugatti Type 55 Figoni
Outstandingly, the Type 55 was built from motorsport derived technology, but with a roadgoing personality.
Evolved from the Type 51 Grand Prix, its engine and chassis were specifically developed to race, including at Le Mans. The one exhibited is the only remaining Type 55 with a body by Figoni.
6. Bugatti Type 59 Sports
With a number of significant race finishes to its name, the Type 59 was part of Ettore Bugatti’s never-ending quest for more performance.
To date, this particular Type 59 Sports remains the only Grand Prix car to be converted into a sports car at the factory and it exists in virtually unrestored original condition.
7. Bugatti Type 101 Antem
Being one of the few cars developed after WWII, the Type 101 only saw seven examples, and each were produced with a different body.
Out of the seven, the Type 101 Antem is one of the most iconic, having a less conservative design, marked out by a futuristic streamlined coupe body.
8. Bugatti EB110 Super Sport
1991, the rebirth of the Bugatti brand saw a new model that totally altered the world of supercars. It was launched to celebrate the 110th birthday of Ettore Bugatti, hence the EB110 moniker.
Displayed in St. Moritz is the last EB110 that was officially delivered before the end of its production run, an EB110 Super Sport, in yellow.
9. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport
When it was introduced, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport once more redefined the boundaries of roadgoing performance.
Boosting 1,184 HP, max torque of 1,500 NM, 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and top speed of 415 km/h, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport was a marvel of hyper sports car engineering.
10. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+
First time in a roadgoing car, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ marks a sensational record-breaking run that exceeded the magical threshold of 483 km/h.
Limited-edition, only 30 units were produced, and each was visually and technically developed with supreme aerodynamics.
11. Bugatti Divo
Divo, Bugatti’s first coachbuilt hyper sports car of the 21st century. This limited-edition and high-performance unit is powered by Bugatti’s iconic 8-litre quad-turbocharged engine.
Of which is complemented with a completely new sportily elegant exterior design, inspired by a long tradition of Bugatti coachbuilding.
12. Bugatti La Voiture Noire
La Voiture Noire is a piece of automotive haute couture inspired by one of the most mysterious Bugattis of all time. Only four of the Type 57 Atlantic models were ever built.
But the fourth, all-black Atlantic has been missing since WWII, the La Voiture Noire. This modern incarnation brings the speed, technology, luxury and aesthetics of an icon into a new era.
13. Bugatti Bolide
Slated for delivery in 2024, the Bolide is the ultimate development in the quest for the purest driving experience of Bugatti’s revolutionary W16 engine.
Freed from the shackles of roadgoing comforts and luxuries, the track-only Bolide is lightweight and developed for maximum downforce.
Passione Engadina - Julius Baer rally
In addition to the ‘Pavillon Bugatti’, other Bugatti icons were also assembled at the Signalbahn parking in St. Moritz, for the Passione Engadina’s Julius Baer Rally.
Said rally consists of a route twisting and turning through Switzerland and Italy, along mountain roads and through the alpine passes of Bernina, Umbrail and Fuorn.
Among the historical line-up was a number of early Bugatti Grand Prix cars, namely, the Type 35, Type 51 and Type 59.
Flanking these, is another particularly special example, the Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, the car that held the ice driving speed record from 1995 until 2013.
Even with standard road tires, the four-wheel-drive Super Sport was able to set an FIA-approved speed of 296 km/h on a frozen lake in Finland.
Passione Engadina - Chiron Super Sport
An epic conclusion, Bugatti Pilote Officiel Andy Wallace headed to the Samedan Airport, a runway located 1,707 m above sea level, for a dynamic presentation of the Chiron Super Sport.
Supported by three other customer cars, it was the perfect location to unleash the full force of the Chiron Super Sport’s 1,578 HP W16 8-litre quad-turbocharged engine.
Passione Engadina - St. Moritz
Now in its eleventh year, Passione Engadina is regarded as one of the world’s most exclusive automotive events that gathers an array of rare classic cars built up until 1992.
Took place in the heart of St. Moritz at the Kulm Hotel, this year’s event was to recognize Bugatti’s brand evolution as one of its featured marques.
All of the iconic examples exhibited during the weekend of 27 and 28 August, were generously donated by Bugatti clientele, opened to the public, and attracted nearly 20,000 guests.
