Previewed: BMW CE 04 Electric Scooter – 130 KM range, estimated RM60,000

Aside from the refreshed and localised 3 Series (G20) LCI range, BMW Group Malaysia expanded its electrification effort on two wheels today by previewing the all-electric BMW CE 04 maxi-scooter into the BMW Motorrad Malaysia range earlier today.

BMW Motorrad Malaysia’s first electrified offering comes in the form of a twist-and-go maxi-scooter, and it’s a sizeable one at that too – it’s 2,285 MM long with a 1,675 MM wheelbase, 855 MM wide, and 1,150 MM tall with a seat height of 780 MM. It’s also rather hefty with a claimed dry weight of 231 KG.

What’s striking here too is the styling of the BMW CE 04. The stance it possesses is best described as low and stretched out. It comes dressed with calm and minimalistic panels finished in Light White, which is contrasted by matt black sections in the front and sides. Another striking feature here is the “floating” seat design that’s finished in matt black too.

Adding to the stance are the wheels and tyres, the former measuring 15-inches in diameter for both the front and rear whilst wrapped in 120/70 R15  and 160/60 R15  tyre profiles respectively.

Underneath, the CE 04 is constructed upon a tubular steel, double-cradle frame chassis. It houses an 8.9 kWh lithium ion battery pack and electric motor, the latter delivering 41 HP (31 kW) and a rather meaty 62 NM of twist, thus putting it on par with most typical 500-650cc combustion-powered maxi-scooters in terms of size and performance.

The motor itself is a liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous type with surface magnets, and it powers the rear wheel, which is mounted on a single-sided swingarm assembly, via a twist-and-go automatic belt-drive. The powertrain also comes with an automatic energy recuperation that activates when either coasting and braking.

In terms of performance, the BMW CE 04 promises rapid speed, with BMW Motorrad claiming stop-and-go acceleration from 0 to 50 km/h in just 2.6 seconds. Top speed, on the other hand, is limited to just 120 KM/H, though we reckon this is programmed in to preserve battery life.

Apart from that, there are four selectable ride modes present too – ECO, Rain, Road, Dynamic.

In terms of range and charging, BMW Motorrad Malaysia says a full charge should grant up to 130 KM of travel. A full recharge from 0% using the standard wall socket outputting 2.3 kW will take 4 hours and 20 minutes. Rapid charging using a dedicated wallbox charger outputting 6.9 kW, on the other hand, does the same in 1 hour and 40 minutes instead.

Like its combustion-powered models, the CE 04 is laced with plenty of the Bavarian brand’s top-shelf chassis hardware. Highlights include 35 MM telescopic front forks (non-adjustable) plus a pre-load adjustable rear shock offering up to 3.6-inches of travel, as well as twin 265 MM disc brakes up front grabbed by quad-piston calipers plus a single 265 MM rear disc brake grabbed by a single-piston caliper, both tied together with an ABS module.

Other key features present include a 10.25-inch TFT colour display with integrated navigation feature plus other connectivity-driven functions via the BMW Motorrad Connected App, USB port, storage bin with USB chargers, 12-volt socket, lighted helmet storage bin, lighted flexcase, keyless ignition, as well as a reversing aid. All of which are standard equipment too.

Available for orders through authorised dealers now, the BMW CE 04 will be available through authorised dealers beginning March this year. Its price, on the other hand, isn’t finalised yet, but BMW Motorrad Malaysia has set an estimated figure of RM60,000.
