JPJ Detects Fake Driving Licence Fraud
According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), there is a widespread scam involving fake driving licences that is thriving on social media.
M. Janagarajan, deputy director-general for management at JPJ, urged motorists to be more vigilant when applying for licences so they don't fall prey to fake documents.
"The licence is an invalid one. This "licence" was obtained through fraud, and neither the JPJ system nor any record of it exist. "If a driver obtains a licence through this means, he or she does not actually own a valid licence and needs to remember that it is fake,” he said, Bernama reported. He made this comment yesterday at a press conference held following a ceremony to mark the conclusion of a team-building course for drivers of Express Bus Konsortium E-Mutiara Bhd at the Jalan Wilayah Timur Transport Academy.
Director Mohd Kifli Ma Hassan of the Road Transport Academy, Director Mohd Misuari Abdullah of the Kelantan JPJ, and Executive Chairman Che Ibrahim Che Ismail of Consortium E-Mutiara Bhd were also present. According to Janagarajan, the JPJ's driving licencing integrity department had identified numerous victims of licence scammers and was taking action. "These scammers operate by posting advertisements on social media claiming that a document is a valid licence when it is not.
"After making payments, some victims receive fake licences. After receiving payment, some victims also claim that the con artist's account has been closed and cannot be located. He declared that court action would be taken against the suspects in conjunction with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police. What the general public must keep in mind is that anyone in possession of a fake driver's licence can only use it for a short period of time before the forgery is discovered when the owner tries to renew their licence the following year.
