Mercedes-Benz Will Preview Next Generation ‘Entry Luxury’ Compact Cars This Year

The mighty three-point star is eager to show off its next-generation compact cars range, and reports indicate that preview teasers will come as early as this year. The new models set for preview here are the CLA, GLA, and GLB Class ranges, and they will form what will be known as the new ‘Entry Luxury’ range.

Sources online report that up to four new models from this range will be previewed before the year ends, all of which underpinning Mercedes’ new MMA architecture platform that’s compatible for both combustion (ICE) and electric (EV) powertrain setups. Both ICE and EV variants, plus hybrid petrol-electric ones, are expected to spawn out of this too.

In a recent interview with Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius re-confirmed the brand’s commitment to the compact segment as the company puts more emphasis on the significantly more profitable high-end models. The exec adds that Mercedes will also still invest in smaller cars, but “focus on the models that we believe are the most successful on a worldwide basis”.

This follows on from the brand’s previous pledge towards streamlining its compact ranges from 7 to just 4 models in total. Models reportedly set to escape the chopping block include the GLA/EQA, GLB/EQB, as well as the CLA four-door coupe. Reports also suggest that a supposed new ‘baby’ G-Class will join this new Entry Luxury range as the fourth model.

This move also aligns with part reports online indicating Mercedes’ intent to kill off the A-Class hatchback – and sedan -  and the B-Class compact MPV ranges beyond 2025. The discontinuation of both these MFA Platform-based models stems from the marque’s intent to move further up-market, with board members within the brand reportedly agreeing not to green-light a successor to the A-Class too.

No further details were confirmed, though credible sources further indicate that the new Entry Luxury offerings will fulfil Mercedes’ aim of moving upmarket through the adoption of higher-end materials and equipment on board. Included here are things like the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which should justify the predicted 14% increase in price these models will command.
