Grab Introduces AudioProtect
In honour of International Women's Day, Grab is officially launching its AudioProtect feature as a new transportation safety measure. The feature was first made available as a pilot programme in limited areas in September, but it now appears that it is ready to be made available to all users nationwide.
AudioProtect is a feature that records the audio of your entire ride on both your device and the driver's, but it must be enabled on both devices before it can begin recording automatically. It will begin recording when the ride begins and will end when the ride is completed.
Audio files that have been recorded are encrypted and are inaccessible to both you and the driver. They will only be sent to Grab if a safety-related incident is reported; otherwise, they will be automatically deleted after five days, as opposed to the trial's 10-day period.
According to its FAQ, when a device receives a phone call, the audio recording is paused and resumes only after the call ends, but the recording continues on the device that is not being used to make a call. The feature is available on all rides except GrabShare and GrabHitch, and it will not work if your phone does not have enough storage.
AudioProtect is disabled by default, but you can enable it by going to the safety settings in your Grab account settings and adding emergency contacts. You can also turn it off at any time.
Grab says that AudioProtect will be released in stages, so keep your app updated if you want to try it out. Other new features introduced by the company recently include quiet rides and a Saver food delivery option.
