"Need To Optimise Space On Short Commuter Trains Greater Than Need For Special Women's Coaches" - Loke
According to the Transport Minister Anthony Loke, there are no special coaches for women on the LRT, KL Monorail, or MRT because space on such trains must be maximized.
"An efficient use of space allows for more passengers, which is especially important when trains are operating during peak hours," said Loke in a March 20 parliamentary written reply.
He did, however, point out that Prasarana staff and auxiliary police are always on hand to assist commuters and ensure their safety.
He also stated that the LRT, KL Monorail, and MRT only have two to four coaches per train but have a high frequency, making it impractical to include a separate coach for women.
"This may cause congestion in the special coach." This differs from intercity trains like the KTM Komuter, which has six coaches and can have special coaches for women," Loke explained.
In 2018, it was reported that KTM Komuter had 76 special coaches for women. Loke was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PH-Bandar Tun Razak), who had asked if special women's coaches for the LRT, KL Monorail, and MRT would be introduced. Wan Azizah also inquired about measures to address allegations of abuse of power and wrongdoing by Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers.
Loke stated that a JPJ integrity plan is being developed, which will include a variety of activities and programs. "The Transport Ministry is also monitoring integrity issues among JPJ employees through enforcement, prevention, and education to combat all forms of corruption," he added.
