Smartlane system to reduce traffic congestion on the NSE
To alleviate traffic congestion as travellers return to the Klang Valley following the Aidilfitri celebrations, the police and highway operator PLUS have activated two smartlane routes on the North-South Expressway. To increase lane capacity and smooth traffic flow, the smartlane system recommends using all lanes, including the leftmost space as a temporary lane. The two routes, according to federal traffic police director Mat Kasim Karim, were from the northbound Port Dickson intersection to the Seremban intersection and from the Senai intersection to the Kulai intersection. "High volumes of vehicles from the south, north, and east heading towards the capital city caused congestion in some places, such as hilly areas and where three lanes converged to two lanes," Mat Kasim explained.

He stated that traffic officers were stationed at congestion hotspots on highways, federal and state roads, and city streets. Mat Kasim stated that the public can report accidents or unusual congestion to the Bukit Aman traffic control room at 03-2266 3356, which is open 24 hours a day. Major highway traffic is moving slowly. On the third day of Aidilfitri, major highways reported slow and heavy traffic this evening. Heavy traffic was reported on southbound lanes from Port Dickson interchange to Senawang R&R; Ayer Keroh R&R to Ayer Keroh; Yong Peng rest stop to South Yong Peng; Ayer Hitam to Simpang Reggam; and Sedenak to Kulai, according to a highway authority spokesman. There was heavy traffic on the northbound route from Kulai to Kulai rest stop, Sedenak to Ayer Hitam, Bukit Gambir to Tangkak, Ayer Keroh to Simpang Ampat, Pedas Linggi to Pedas Linggi, Senawang R&R to Port Dickson interchange, and Bandar Ainsdale to Seremban R&R. Similar traffic was reported on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak motorway from Kuala Lumpur to the Karak intersection to the Bentong Toll until Lentang and Bukit Tinggi to Genting Sempah. Meanwhile, the police announced on Facebook that there were 1,381 accidents involving 2,072 vehicles nationwide on Sunday, the fourth day of Ops Selamat 20.

Op Selamat 20 will last seven days, beginning on April 20. According to the report, cars were involved in the most accidents, accounting for 1,528 of the total cases recorded (73.7%). "This was followed by motorcycles (256), four-wheel drive vehicles (122), multi-purpose vehicles (102 cases), vans (43), lorries (13), buses (five), and three taxi accidents," the statement read. They also advised drivers to be cautious in order to avoid accidents.
