This Hyundai Mobis Display Can Be Rolled Into the Dash of Your Car!
Flexible screens or displays are not really a new thing in the tech world, with numerous smartphone models now featuring foldable or flippable screens to reduce the gadget’s footprint when not used. However, rollable displays on phones are not that popular nor practical, but this tech might end up useful somewhere else, as showcased by Hyundai.

The South Korean automotive giant, via its technology development arm Hyundai Mobis, has developed a new rollable display specifically catered for automobiles usage. The firm claims this is the first time such applications were used for in-vehicle infotainment displays, possibly setting a new trend in the automotive cabin tech foray.

Just like in smartphones, Hyundai Mobis utilises the OLED technology that does not require a glass screen. Instead, the firm uses flexible materials like plastic, which allows the OLED display to be bendable, thus allowing the rolling mechanism to be implemented.

Thanks to the compact form of the display when being rolled, Hyundai Mobis claims their rollable display can be stretched out to as big as 30-inch – which is massive in today’s infotainment display standard. Users also can opt to roll out the display partially, allowing them to forecast selected information only at times, without the distraction of other unnecessary functions and information display bothering the drivers.
Users can also roll out the display in multiple aspect ratios, aside from its full 16:9 orientation for videos. When rolled in, the 30-inch flat display only takes about 4.7-inch of space deep in the front dash.

Although built to cater to future Hyundai automobiles, Hyundai Mobis says it sees this technology appealing and usable by any other luxury auto brands, especially those hailing from Europe and North America. This revelation suggests that Hyundai Mobis is willing to share this cutting-edge technology to other marques apart from its Hyundai sister brands like Kia and Genesis.
Though rollable displays are pretty much a novelty thing now, numerous automakers have attempted to put a spin (literally) on their cars’ infotainment displays. For example, BYD has fitted a rotatable infotainment display for its Atto 3 EV SUV, where users can change the infotainment screen’s orientation from portrait to landscape at the touch of a button.
Should Hyundai Mobis be willing to share this tech with the rest of the boys, we’ll sure many EV marques will look forward to further future-proofing their models with this cutting-edge display.
