Future Ford EVs Will Use Tesla’s NACS Charging Port

American giant automaker Ford has just announced that it will adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port for future Ford EVs. This came months after Tesla finally open-sourced its proprietary EV charging technology for third parties to adopt in their EVs.

This means that future Ford EVs will be able to use Tesla’s vast Supercharging network in the future, with both the former and its NACS port being the key to Tesla’s massive success in the continent.

Said announcement took place in a Twitter Space live session that features Ford CEO Jim Farley alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The Blue Oval marque boss, however, added that this doesn’t mean Ford will completely discard its current chargers, hinting that future Ford EVs will come with two types of charging ports instead.

Current Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV uses the standard Type 2/CCS2 charging port

As for the rollout, Ford has laid out several phases of this adoption plan, which starts with using an adapter for the CCS1 port to make it compatible with the NACS. For this first phase, all current Ford EVs will come with this adapter, before offering Ford models with built-in NACS later this decade.

"Starting early next year Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit customers will be able to access the Superchargers via an adapter. In 2025, Ford will offer next-generation electric vehicles with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector built-in, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers," said Ford in a statement.

Commenting on this adoption, senior director of Tesla charging infrastructure Rebecca Tinucci said, “We’re excited to deliver on our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy by welcoming Ford owners, and other electric vehicles who adopt NACS, to our thousands of Superchargers across North America.”

Tesla NACS are usable for both Supercharger network and home wallbox charger

As we mentioned earlier, Tesla has just recently opened its NACS charging port, enabling other EV manufacturers to adopt and use them. Before Ford, US-based EV start-up Aptera has voiced their plans to use Tesla’s NACS for their EV models. Apart from that, Ford is the first and currently only major EV manufacturer to voice their commitments in adopting this super fast charging technology.

Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) port

The Tesla NACS has been used in North American countries ever since the introduction of the Tesla Model S, which is about a decade ago. Aside from the superiorly-vast public charging networks, the NACS also works with home chargers, as well as other fast-charging networks by the means of an adapter.

Before this, we’ve reported that Ford has submitted a patent for its own EV charging port that uses magnetic coupling technology. With Ford now has voiced their commitments in using the NACS, perhaps this Apple’s MagSafe-like charging port will be shelved for some time later.
